Lifetime Service Award
The Public Lands Foundation is pleased to present John Ruhs with its Lifetime Service Award for excellence in public land management. The Foundation provides this award to deserving Bureau of Land Management employees who have perpetuated and enhanced the proud tradition of public service.
John began his approximately 33-year career with the BLM as a GS-3 Range Rider for the Vale District in Oregon and retired as Idaho State Director in 2021. Prior to joining the BLM, John served for four years in the U.S. Marine Corps and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from the University of Idaho.
Over his career, John worked in at least 13 staff and line positions in numerous locations and across several programs. He played key roles in developing Rangeland Fire Protection Associations, sage grouse habitat conservation plans, and the National Seed Strategy. He also guided participation in the Owl Mountain Partnership, the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative, and other conservation initiatives.
John exemplified loyalty to his employees and the agency while demonstrating exceptional professionalism and a commitment to collaboration with other governmental agencies and interest groups. He was frequently asked to speak to local, regional, national and international organizations, including the Society for Range Management and the National Association of Conservation Districts.
The Public Lands Foundation is honored to recognize John Ruhs with this Lifetime Service Award presented October 9, 2024, at the PLF’s annual meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.
